The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) established the Department of Extramural Studies in 1965. Since January 2006, it has been renamed as the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCS). Bearing the mission of providing quality continuing professional education programmes and services to meet the changing needs of society, the School offers a diverse range of courses and programmes at different levels. In 2009-10, more than 1,200 general courses and about 200 award-bearing programmes were offered with a total enrolment of about 39,000.

In support of Government initiatives to provide secondary school leavers with additional avenues to pursue higher education in Hong Kong, SCS has been developing a variety of Higher Diploma programmes since 2002.

Moreover, SCS offers tailored corporate training courses to private companies, government departments, organisations, schools and universities in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and overseas. Commendations have been received on both the course design and academic standard of these courses.

香港中文大學於一九六五年成立校外進修部，在一九九四年易名為香港中文大學校外進修學院，並於二零零六年起易名為香港中文大學專業進修學院。學院秉承服務社會、提倡優質持續專業教育的使命，配合香港發展步伐及不同行業人士的進修需求，提供多元化教育服務，二零零九年至一零年開設逾一千二百項短期課程及近二百項學歷課程，學生人次約三萬九千。

學院的課程大致分為兩大類：短期課程及學歷課程。短期課程一般為期二至四個月，不設特定入學要求，主要為個人興趣或增值而設。學院自一九七九年開辦學歷課程，提供證書、文憑、高等文憑及專業文憑等課程。學歷課程通常設基本入學要求，課程設計亦依循大學本部要求，以保證素質。

隨着香港特別行政區政府推廣高等及專上教育，自2002年起學院特開設多項高級文憑課程供中五及中七畢業生報讀。學院也因應內地或香港公私營機構的需要，籌辦各類型在職培訓課程。學院的課程無論在設計或學術水平方面，均獲一致好評。
